Recently, an organisation bombarded employees with repeated emails about setting objectives for 2024. There are two types of employee, each having slightly different processes for appraisal and objective setting. One uses a standard form that is completed and uploaded to an HR system that includes a section for objectives. The other submits directly into an online portal, both the appraisal and objectives.

Amongst a mass of text, a reference to those who have completed the standard form and uploaded to click a link to confirm objectives were set.

Why?! No reason is given for this extra step.

Yet again, an organisation exerts a ‘command-and-control’ mentality, misses the opportunity to share with employees the reason there is extra work. Shrouded in mystery, most employees will just click the link. Nobody really questions it.

Does it come back to trust of employees? Are they not trusted to have set objectives (and yes, I know, objectives and appraisals fly in the face of our Deming mindset).
